CT 22 – Peter Gardner

Memorial Stone Installation Date: June 1, 2021

Location: 145 Ledge Hill Road, Guilford, Connecticut. The stone is located below the plaque for Harriet Beecher Stowe across from St. John’s Episcopal Church.

Peter was held captive in the household of Jared Scranton and was freed by him in 1793. Soon after he married Dinah who had been purchased by the Selectmen of Guilford for the town in 1792. They lived together on property adjacent to Jared Scranton and his son in North Guilford for many years. In his will, there were many farming implements that showed what type of work he did, as well as a fiddle. Diniah lived on the land for many years until her death.
